After 2
I’ve been looking for a piece of furniture for the living room wall for over a year. After searching far and wide, I never found anything that was quite right. Finding furniture that is less than 14 inches deep is very hard. Finding furniture that is less than 14 inches deep, is modern but not chartreuse or plastic or chartreuse plastic is almost impossible.  One day I was reading Apartment Therapy and saw their post on the Endlessly Adaptable Ikea Rast Chest.   The Ikea Rast 3 drawer chest  (x2) was the perfect size for my wall so Charlie and I took a drive out to Ikea to get two of them.  And since February they have sat, unloved, until this weekend.
Before
The project itself took about a day. I started by removing the all of the knobs.
During
I then used some tack cloth  and wiped down the chests to remove all the dog hair dust.
During 2
I then preconditioned the cabinets with a coat of Minwax pre-stain conditioner. I’m not sure the the conditioner helped the process or if I just spent an extra $12 at Home Depot.
 During 3
I let the conditioner soak in for 15 minutes then applied one coat of Minwax Ebony Stain.
During 4
After a coat of stain I let the cabinets dry for 24 hours.
During 5
The  next day I applied a coat of Minwax Polycrylic.
During 6
After the polycrylic dried I added some hardware that I already had.   Done and Done!
After 1

The whole project took 2 days and was around 5 hours of work (not including the time it took Charlie to assemble the cabinets which was about an hour per cabinet). The cost was less than $150 for the entire project (including the drop cloths and brushes).  And, I have enough stain left over to stain log cabin!

These look very nice. And it’s so handy you’ll have enough for cabin staining. haha
