Holiday Table

Now that we are in the heat of the holidays, parties with delectiable food and drinks are abundant.  Making wise choices in the diet department is tough. It’s hard to put down that third glass of wine.  It’s not easy NOT eating your weight in baked brie.

Here is how I handle eating during the holidays.

First there are 365 days in the year.  That equates to 1095 meals.  In the end a few holiday meals will not break my diet.

Strategdy #1- I don’t go overboard.  I try to eat normal portions.  I don’t so much worry about how the food was cooked or how fattening or calorie rich it is but rather, I focus on eating a sensible portion and enjoying what I eat.

Strategdy #2- I alternate cocktails with water.  First, water keeps me sober.  Second, it wards off a hangover.  And third, it saves me liquid calories.

Strategdy #3- I take a plate.  If there are appetizers at a party I try to disrupt a direct to consumer food supply chain by putting appetizers on a plate.  It allows me to have a portion of food and pick items that I want to eat.  I also tend to eat a lot less if I create a portion of food to eat.  It is the same theory as not eating chips directly out of a bag.

Strategdy #4- I ask, “Is it worth it?” In other words, let other people be your taste tester. I do this with dessert quite a bit. Have you ever seen a beautiful cake, your mouth waters and then you take a bite and think cardboard has more moisture in it.

Strategdy #5 – I ask for a sliver or just a taste.  I think sometimes we don’t want to offend a hostess so we take a serving of food.  Instead just ask for taste.  A sliver of pie sometimes is just enough sweetness to finish off a meal.

Strategdy #6 – I ENJOY myself and don’t beat myself up if things go aery.  What’s done is done.  Your next balanced and healthy meal is as close as your next meal.
