Walnut Maple Old Fashioned with Hudson Whiskey

As you know (because you follow me on Twitter or Instagram), I filled my New Year’s Eve celebrations with whiskey.  While I love a flute of celebratory champagne , I love a great whiskey cocktail even more.  So why not imbibe in my favorite spirt to celebrate the end of a great year? And, so I did with a special wintery cocktail I made using one of Heretic Spirits recipe, see https://www.hereticspirits.com/recipe/ for more of their party cocktails recipes.

Walnut Maple Old Fashioned

Last year at Christmas Charlie and I were gifted a bottle of Single Malt Hudson Whiskey.   Hudson Whiskey is the first whiskey made in New York since the end of Prohibition and has established itself as a pioneer of the craft spirits movement. We placed it in the “special bottle” section of our liquor cabinet to slowly savor it.

Hudson Whiskeys

Then this summer I was invited to attend a Hudson Whiskey Tasting Event.  This is where I fell in love with their Maple Cask Rye Whiskey.  After aging maple syrup in Hudson bourbon casks, the barrels are sent back to Hudson Whiskey as maple syrup-cured casks, which the Hudson Whiskey team fills with rye whiskey. The whiskey then rests in the casks for an additional four months to allow the flavors inside to blend. This cask finish technique creates a well-balanced taste profile of maple sweetness with all of the spiciness of rye whiskey, and no additional ingredients.  Not only is this is a great reuse of barrels, it is an excellent way to make whiskey, well, if you ask me.

Pregame Maple Walnut Old Fashioned

On New Year Eve I created a special cocktail using some of may favorite winter flavors maple and walnut and then accented those flavors with bright citrus.  Like Father Time the Maple Walnut Old Fashioned Cocktail was born.  It is a wonderfully warming Old Fashioned.   It’s sweet but not toothsome.  It’s spicy but not pungent.  And, this cocktail is, or shall I say was,  remarkably drinkable.
